The Afghan refugee gateway
Drive south on Interstate 5 from downtown Seattle. Exit at Tukwila. The landscape changes. Strip malls with Somali restaurants — suugo and bariis, injera bread, halal goat. Afghan kebab shops with bolani and mantoo in the window. East African grocery stores with shelves of berbere spice and imported teff flour.
Seattle resettled more Afghan refugees than almost any US metro after the 2021 withdrawal. They joined a growing East African diaspora — Somalis who arrived in the 1990s, Ethiopians, Eritreans. The south end of Seattle (Tukwila, SeaTac, Kent) became an unplanned refugee corridor. 146 Pakistani businesses. 246 Chinese. A growing Somali presence that most Seattleites in Capitol Hill or Ballard never see.
192,000 Somalis live in the United States. Zero percent evangelical. The Afghan community has a documented unreached people group profile in the Seattle metro — one of only 69 such profiles in all of North America.
Afghan churches in Seattle: zero. Somali churches: zero.
The University of Washington alone draws thousands of international students, many from China and India. They arrive in a city that prides itself on diversity but has built almost no infrastructure to reach the communities living south of downtown.

“The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.”
2 Peter 3:9
Drive to Tukwila. Walk into a Somali restaurant. Order suugo and bariis. Sit down. Notice who else is eating there.
Contact Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service or World Relief Seattle. Ask what volunteers they need. Ask what keeps them overwhelmed.
Learn the word "mehman-nawazi" — it's Dari for hospitality. Afghan culture prizes it above almost everything.
The nations didn't wait.
They were airlifted to SeaTac.
